Astro, Ali Campbell and Mickey Virtue of UB40
Last week Day & Night reported that Ali had branded Robin and his younger brother Duncan “embarrassing” for continuing to sing his songs, despite leaving the band more than a decade ago.
Now Robin, 61, who, like Ali, 59, continues to perform as UB40, insists his brother has no business continuing to use the band’s name.
“There was no battle when Ali left.
“He spent five years performing under his own name.
“It’s only in the last couple of years that he’s trying to steal our name, basically,” says Robin, who explains that his original band never stopped performing and simply replaced Ali as the frontman with Duncan, 58.
“Ali resigned. He didn’t start the band.
“We were a democratic band that he chose to leave, thereby leaving the remaining members to carry on as UB40 and that is what we did.
“He never owned the name and we never split up. We carried on performing and recording as UB40 and for Ali, five years later, to decide that he can use our name is ludicrous.”
The Can’t Help Falling In Love singer Ali has since teamed up with fellow former bandmates Mickey Virtue and Astro and their new album A Real Labour Of Love hit the shops yesterday.

THE sister of the late actress Sharon Tate has accused Leonardo DiCaprio and Brad Pitt of cashing in on her murder.
Sharon Tate’s sister Debra has accused Leonardo DiCaprio and Brad Pitt of cashing in on her murder
As we revealed on Thursday, the two Hollywood hunks have signed up to star in Quentin Tarantino’s new film about Sharon’s death that shook Hollywood in 1969.
“To them it’s a paycheck. These people just don’t care,” blasts Debra Tate, 65, whose eight-month pregnant sister was stabbed to death aged 26 by followers of the late cult leader Charles Manson.
“They are terribly hurtful to the actual family and all the living victims. They don’t give a damn.
“They are throwing all their social responsibility to the wind.”
When Jennifer Lawrence was rumoured to play Sharon, Debra griped “she’s not pretty enough”.
The role eventually went to Australian Margot Robbie.
EMMA BUNTON has laughed off rumours that she and THE SPICE GIRLS will be guests and also perform at the royal wedding.
Following her ex-bandmate MEL B telling the world on Monday that she’d received a formal invite to the May nuptials of PRINCE HARRY and MEGHAN MARKLE, Emma, 42, tells Day & Night at the star-studded Global Music Awards: “Mel B is hilarious. I am going to have to talk to her. I haven’t had an invite. I’m missing something?”
However, the mum-of-two would certainly dust off her hat and grab the microphone given half a chance.
“It’d be fab! I think they need a bit of Spice. Don’t they?”
Meanwhile, in a less optimistic mood was singer PALOMA FAITH, 36, who was still reeling from the backlash she received for her antics at last week’s Brit Awards.
The Cry Baby star received abuse online for what appeared to be a fake and over-the-top smile when losing out on Best Female to newcomer DUA LIPA, 22.
Spice Girl Emma Bunton has laughed off rumours that the group would perform at the royal wedding
“The backlash was down to sexism. I think it’s really sad they don’t do that in the male category,” she said.
“They never say they lost out to this guy and have cameras pan to look at their face.’’
The event, held at London’s Hammersmith Apollo, saw other celebs, including socialite ABBEY CLANCY presenter MYLEENE KLASS and model DAISY LOWE brave the freezing conditions to watch performances by the likes of SAM SMITH and RITA ORA.

Catherine Tate is hosting next month’s prestigious Olivier Awards
The comedian, 49, reveals she landed the gig after bumping into a “decision maker” for the awards ceremony on a night out at the theatre.
“In the interval he went off to get me an ice cream.
“I was vegan at the time so I put it under my seat,” explains Catherine, best known for her TV roles in The Catherine Tate Sketch Show as the swearing Nan and stroppy teenager Lauren ‘Am I Bovvered?’ Cooper.
“At the end he said he worked for the Oliviers and they were talking about me that day so he thought it was a sign.”
Aside from Catherine’s TV work, her numerous stage credits include a 2011 West End production of Much Ado About Nothing with her Doctor Who co-star David Tennant.
The Oliviers will take place at London’s Royal Albert Hall on April 8 and will be broadcast on ITV.
JENNIFER LAWRENCE thinks about pushing people on to the tracks whenever she takes the train.
Jennifer Lawrence said she thinks about pushing people on to the tracks whenever she takes the train
The 27-year-old actress admitted to having the troubling thoughts while taking a lie detector test for Vanity Fair magazine, during which she was asked to make a decision over redirecting a speeding train so that it hit only one person or allowing it to plough into a group of 20 people.
Although she said she’d pull the train’s reverser handle, she admitted: “Every time I am in the subway I always think about pushing people on the tracks.
“I don’t get tempted to do it but it crosses my mind.”
The Oscar-winner has become known for her unconventional humour and left-field remarks.
Last month, she faced criticism after responding to Ab Fab star Joanna Lumley’s gushing welcome on to the Bafta stage as “a bit much”.
Jennifer, who insisted her remark was a joke, has since declared: “I’m not going to joke any more – they never go right. Nobody ever gets it.”
