US plane crash: Pilot ejects from F-15 fighter jet in crash off the coast of Japan | World | News

The craft had taken off from the US Air Force’s Kadena Base in Okinawa at around 6.40am local time on Monday (10.40pm Sunday GMT).

As of 8.50am local time (12.50am on Sunday GMT) the Kadena Air Base tweeted to confirm the crash.

It added the pilot successfully ejected and was recovered.

The base tweeted: “Around 6.36am this morning, a Kadena F-15C Eagle crashed in the water south of Okinawa.

“The pilot successfully ejected and was safely recovered by search and rescue teams.”

F-15 fighter jets are twin-engined tactical fighters that were initially envisioned as a pure air superiority vehicle.

The plane can be equipped with a number of different air-to-air weapons that included AIM-7F/M Sparrow missiles or AIM-120 AMRAAM advanced medium-range air-to-air missiles.

The US Air Force is understood to have been considering scrapping the F-15 fighters in exchange for F-16 falcons.

F-15 fighters could be completely removed from Donald Trump’s military arsenal by 2020.
