Ivanka Trump: How Rupert Murdoch’s wife played cupid with Ivanka and Jared Kushner | World | News

Ivanka and Jared are one of the most famous couples in US politics have been married since 2009. They both serve as special advisors to Ivanka’s father President Donald Trump. However, they almost split for good in 2008 because Jared’s parents Seryl and Charlie Kushner disapproved of him dating someone outside their Orthodox Jewish faith.

They broke up for three months but were reunited on a boating holiday organised by Wendi Deng Murdoch, the then-wife of the News Corps media mogul.

Wendi invited them both on holiday without telling them the other would be there, according to 2019 book ‘Kushner Inc’.

Author Vicky Ward wrote: “Jared and Ivanka were apart for around three months.

“They were reunited that summer, on a boating holiday orchestrated by Rupert Murdoch’s then-wife, Wendi Deng Murdoch.

“Neither had any idea the other would be there. Soon after, Ivanka converted to Judaism.”

Ms Murdoch is a Chinese-born American entrepreneur, investor and film producer.

She was married to Mr Murdoch, who is 37 years her senior, from 1999 to 2013 and they have two children together – Grace and Chloe.

Mr Murdoch filed for divorce in 2013 citing irreconcilable differences.

However, during their marriage both Rupert and Wendi Murdoch were closely associated with Jared and Ivanka.

Without Ms Murdoch, the pair may have stayed split up, as Jared’s parents were “horrified by the match”.

Ms Ward wrote: “Seryl and Charlie were dismayed at the idea of their son marrying outside the faith.

“The idea was particularly offensive to Seryl, who had raised the children.

“They were her world and her world was the closed conservative Jewish culture she had grown up in.

“Charlie and Seryl refused to even meet Ivanka.”

However, after the fateful boating holiday where the pair rekindled their romance, Ivanka agreed to convert to Judaism.

She did this under the instruction of Rabbi Haskel Lookstein, the rabbi of Congregation Kehilath Jeshurun on New York’s Upper East Side.

He had some gravitas as a member of the Rabbinical Council of America, although his conversions have been brought into question by authorities in Israel.

An American woman who moved to Israel called Nicole Zeiter – who had converted under the instruction of Rabbi Lookstein – was denied a marriage license because her conversion was not deemed legitimate.

However, more recently a list of approved rabbis for conversion was published and Rabbi Lookstein’s name was, confusingly, on the list.

Jared’s father apparently made Ivanka’s conversion “as challenging as possible”.

A family friend, Bob Sommmer, said: “This wasn’t like, ‘Talk to a rabbi, read a couple of paragraphs. It was hard and it was on Charlie’s terms.’”

Nevertheless, Ivanka “surpassed expectations” and by the time the wedding took place on October 25, 2009, her new in-laws were “effusive” about her.

The same could not be said for the other way around however, as Mr Trump was apparently “discombobulated” by the conversion and had a low opinion of Jared’s father.

According to a friend he “looked down” on Charlie, because he had been “stupid” enough to be caught fudging his accounts and sent to prison for two years.

He also allegedly made mocking comments about Jared, saying: “Why couldn’t she have married Tom Brady?” and “Jared is half the size of Tom Brady’s arm.”
