George HW Bush funeral: Donald Trump and Melania arrive at Capitol Hill | World | News

Bush served as America’s 41st president from 1988 until 1992, and served before that as vice president during Ronald Reagan’s administration. His death, late Friday at his home in Houston, was announced by his son and fellow Republican, former President George W. Bush. The Trumps spent just over a minute in the US Capitol Rotunda.

The US President and Melania closed their eyes while praying before saluting.

The First Lady placed her hand over her heart.

The body of the 41st President was brought to the Capital in a flag-draped casket on Monday after being sent from Texas.

Vice President Mike Pence, House Speaker Paul Ryan and Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell were among the dignitaries who joined the extended Bush family as the casket arrived in the Rotunda.

Monday morning marked the start of a three-day period of mourning that will conclude with the 41st president’s funeral on Wednesday.

Dignitaries eulogised Mr Bush for his decency and his service to the nation.

Senate majority leader Mitch McConnell said: “Through the Cold war and the Soviet Union’s collapse, he kept us on course.

“When the rule of law needed defending in the Persian Gulf, he kept us on course.

“He kept us flying high and challenged us to fly higher still.

“And he did it with modesty and kindness that would have been surprising in someone one tenth as tough and accomplished as he was.”
