“America is now in a different type of war,” he told viewers.

He continued: “I know nothing about the whole drug thing. I’ve smoked a little dope but I’ve never been deeply involved in it.”

Making a joke about his health issue, he said: “I don’t shake because I’m in need of a fix, I shake because I’ve got Parkinson’s disease.”

Parkinson’s is a condition in which parts of the brain become progressively damaged over many years, according to the NHS website and involuntary shaking his one of the symptoms.

As he spoke about the amount of deaths from Opioids, he said: “The numbers are terrifying, higher than the Vietnam war.”

Sir Billy then candidly mentioned his own son, Jamie, 50, and said he has a “problem”.

He shared on the show: “My son has a problem he’s in AA and he told me when he went to the detox place, some kids were being let out and they were back on the stuff before they got to the railway station, it’s so powerful.”

The Big Yin went on: “People who don’t know about it say ‘why do they take it, just say no’.

“‘Just say stop and you’ll be better’… duh… it’s extraordinary.”

With it being the finale episode of the series, many took to Twitter to praise Sir Billy with one writing: “If it was up to me Billy Connolly would be on my telly every week showing me places I’ve never been and chatting to folk I’d like to meet.”

Another said: “Enjoyed Billy Connolly’s Great American Trail, still working away and he’s at ease with everybody he meets. Such a personality. Legend.”

In the first episode, Sir Billy explained he never expected to grow old as he spoke to the official witch of Salem, Laura Cabot.

She said to him: “You know I’m your elder I’m 86,” to which he responded: “I’m 76.”

The witch continued: “I know that, I’m way ahead of you. Isn’t it wonderful we’re that old?”

“I love it, I never thought I would get here,” Sir Billy replied honestly.

“You’re a handsome man, you know that,” she told Sir Billy.

Speaking about Sir Billy’s wife, Pamela Stephenson, Laura complimented: “She’s a lucky woman.”

He responded: “He’s beautiful.”
